I wanted to share something that I learned with you guys.
Ok, well to start, my grandpa has always called me Lolita, kind of a weird nick name I always thought. When I got older I asked him what it meant, why he called me that. He said it was a name for a young lady that was, well, a slut but, he said that he liked the name anyway.... Of course I was like, gee thanks for giving me a nickname like that! So, today in the paper, while I was hunting for my Michael's coupon, I see, in huge letters, the name Lolita. I stopped, and boy am I glad I did.
It turns out Lolita was a book by Vladimir Nabokov written 50 years ago. This guy, Nabokov, didn't believe that books had to have morals or be able to be related to the readers life, he felt that writing was the main point of a novel. Lolita is about a pedophile, 37 years old, who become obsessed with a girl named Lolita, she's 12 and not the least bit seductive. In fact, she even picks her nose. The paper says "Its subject matter is certainly sexual, but it's sex veiled by the most elegant language."
Eventually, they "loosely based" a movie on the book and as Hollywood must always, they pervert it into a movie about a teenage girl who is very seductive and uses it to her advantage. So, instead of the the name Lolita being a symbol for "the confiscation of one's individual life by another" (said by a professor) she has become a common slut with horrible ambitions to much of the general population. This hole twisting of a great lesson by our pop culture makes me really sad because, she never was anything but an innocent girl.
So, yeah that's what I learned today. See you all soon.
